Problems Learning Source Control
This week, our team encountered a significant obstacle in our game development process related to pushing scripts to Perforce. Due to a lack of understanding about the correct procedures for integrating scripts into the Perforce repository, we experienced instances where scripts were lost or improperly saved. This issue poses a severe risk to the project's integrity, as scripts are fundamental components of our game's functionality. Without proper version control and backup procedures in place, the potential for script loss or corruption could significantly impact the stability and functionality of the game.
Blog Entry Part 2: Problem Solution
In addressing the challenge of integrating scripts into Perforce, we prioritized immediate action and straightforward solutions. Firstly, we acknowledged the need for better understanding and adherence to Perforce's integration protocols. To achieve this, we initiated a brief team discussion to clarify the basic steps for pushing scripts to Perforce. Through open communication and knowledge-sharing, we ensured that each team member understood the essential procedures for script integration.
Next, we established a straightforward protocol: before making any changes to scripts, team members must simply ensure to check them out from Perforce. This simple step, though basic, significantly reduces the risk of conflicts and inadvertent script loss. By opting for a straightforward approach focused on clear communication and minimal procedural overhead, we were able to swiftly address the issue at hand.
